E-learning as a tool of knowledge transfer in the field of protection and management of archaeological heritage

The project was selected and co-funded by the European Commission and it was coordinated by Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań (project number - PL/07/LLP-LdV/TOI/140017)

The project had duration of 24 months. Starting date of the project was 2 November 2007 and its completion date was 31 October 2009.

The project was intended to consolidate a European co-operation in education and training in sector of protection and management of archaeological heritage. Its major aim was to design, develop, test, assess and implement innovative solutions in developing and upgrading vocational skills in this sector at the European level. This involves new vocational training tools and products using ICTs, which will promote access to vocational training. The field of protection and management of archaeological heritage is in the process of dynamic and multi-scalar changes and transformations and continuous vocational training of people working in the sector and prospective employees is a must.

The main and direct target groups in the project were professionals in the sector of archaeological heritage protection and management as well as graduate and extramural students interested in this field of expertise from all participating countries. Other specialists working in the archaeological sector or people somehow related to this sector, such as archaeologists, planners, architects, etc. also constituted the target group. Since this is a largely dispersed group, the most efficient way to get access to high-quality vocational knowledge is internet application for communication and knowledge distribution.

The project was conducted by the partnership consisting of six institutions (from six UE member states: Germany, Latvia, the Netherlands, Poland, Sweden, and the United Kingdom). This selection of partners ensured transnational co-operation from different and complementary institutional and cultural background in terms of vocational training in the field of archaeological heritage protection and management. All these institutions have extensive experience in the field of archaeological heritage education and vocational training as well as e-learning implementation solutions (Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science, Adam Mickiewicz University).

The project involved:
- elaboration of methodology of the e-learning solutions in the field of protection and management of archaeological heritage, which has not been achieved to date,
- production of 15 multimedia e-learning courses covering the most significant issues in this field and their distribution between the partners,
- a test training carried out by all partners to assess quality and effectiveness of created materials and products.
